Key Biscayne Homes

It’s hard to believe that Key Biscayne, now known as an island paradise with a vibrant community, used to be the home of the Tequesta Indians long before Ponce de Leon arrived in 1513 and claimed the island for the King of Spain under the name of Santa Maria. Key Biscayne is an island south of Downtown Miami which began development in the 1950s. The majority of the homes being constructed at the time were Mackle beach homes composed of three bedrooms and a screened in porch to ward off mosquitoes. These homes were mostly occupied by World War II veterans and their families as well as retirees, therefore defining Key Biscayne as a quiet community. It wasn’t until the presidency of Richard Nixon when Key Biscayne began to draw international attention through his “Winter White House” located on the island, where Nixon would spend Christmas with his family and retreat during short weekend trips.

Today, the secluded island, which can be reached through the Rickenbacker Causeway, is known as a growing and peaceful community. Great schools, beautiful beaches, and a good amount of retail stores and restaurants can all be found on the island. It is also a great place to jog and bike around the scenic Crandon Park boardwalk, play tennis at the Crandon Park Tennis Center, which hosts the annual Sony Open, and play golf at the Crandon Golf’s public championship 18-hole course.

While Key Biscayne offers a secluded and peaceful lifestyle, residents can also take a quick car ride to Downtown Miami, Coconut Grove, and South Beach. From stunning waterfront homes to family Mackle beach homes to condominiums, Key Biscayne has a variety of living options that cater to many different needs and lifestyle choices.
